Well, another day at home tomorrow. We had a snow storm last night the house is nearly in snow. I am watching the news right now, CPS is making an announcement about the status of classes tomorrow. Oh my, there is not school on Feb 3- amazing and incredible give the history of CPS to not close the schools in the past. More time at home with Keelan and the National Board Certification papers. I am also exercising while shoveling the snow form the entrance of the house and the garage.

July 31: Keelan get her first wheels

Well, another milestone, Keelan got her first set of wheels today! She got a "Flyer" Tricycle.

Her new tricycle which she call bicycle is blue. The little compartment on the back is yellow and it comes with a long handle for parents to maneuver the front wheels- in case the litle one wants to run away-. Anyway, she is delighted- has not stop talking about it since we bought it this morning.

June 27: Peace and quiet

All is peaceful at home. I just returned from the Farmer's Market, I just can not get enough of it. The "market" is the best thing ever, since we started to attend, we no longer shop at the "big" grocery store. It is just such a pleasure to stroll on the street, talk to friends or just start a conversation with a neighbour. It is a very enjoyable feeling to share. We ( when I say we I refer to me and William), have established a relationship with some of the vendors. That is something you can not do at Jewel.
Today it was raining when Keelan and woke up. So, William stayed home with Keelan and I went to the market by myself. Yes, it was nice to not have to think of others, but it is not the same without the family. Now, going to the market is the thing to do on Sundays- our family day-. So I rather that we are all together when is time to get groceries.
I purchase white fish from Michigan and the a new root-cabbage like- that I am going to try. I do not know the name, my friends at Radical Roots said that it was good. I will visit their website to find the name of the root I purchase from them. Oh the baked beans were delish...next time I will try it with "soldier beans", I used "pink beans" this time and I believe that the beans absorbed too much liquid so it was not as saucy as I expected the baked beans to be. This week I am trying a new salad mix and beets.

June 25 2010: While Keelan is asleep

Garage sale on the alley, beans cooking on the stove and Keelan is asleep. The perfect time to blog. I have not blogged for a while....I wonder why not.

It is a slow day today I am making baked beans, it takes a long time to bake and then I have to mix the molasses, salt pork, etc. I love cooking...oh the Andy Warhol song is on, Keelan is dancing up the storm-she loves music and specially David Bowie songs. Back to cooking, summer, I can say is my favorite part of the year. School is over, days are slow and I can spend more time with my family and also cooking. Speaking of cooking, one of the projects I have started this summer is to document the recipes I create. I want to write a recipe book for Keelan.

These days food had become a serious business at the Scanlan home, every Sunday we go tho the Farmer's Market, shop, then we go home and the fun begins. While William indulge in football games and such I am in the kitchen making Keelan's food from scratch. So, no more store bought jars of baby food. All fresh, organic and homemade. I never imagine I would do such a thing, but now that I am do it, it feels GREAT! That makes up for the cloth diapers I was planning to use once Keelan was born, right! It never happened.

School is over and Summer is here. Keelan is growing fast, she can now stand by grabbing the edge of the crib and prop herself up. Keelan loves standing and now every edge is her tool to do so. She is very persistent, so falling is not an impediment for her. Her personality shows more and more everyday.

Not her best day this day.

All the Francis (Francis, William Francis and Keelan Francis) are getting ready to travel. Oh my!! Oh my !! This will be a 4 to 6 hours flight to Puerto Rico for her to meet her great grandma "Paca" of about 100 and something years old. We are so much looking forward to this trip- me more than anyone else as I am READY for a vacation! Yeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssss!
Keelan is now kicking kicking and kicking some more, and yes, droooooooooooling beyond the limits of our imagination, so much saliva that we have to change her onesis very often as it is wet all the time not to mention the sleeves which are soaking wet. These days her favorite thing to suck is her thumb...bye bye pacifier. For the first time this past Saturday she laugh out loud while I was reading Dr. Seuss Hop and Pop to her. She had a blast!

By the way Keelan is now about 12 pounds, eating up to 8 ounces five times a day. She is now getting formula with Rice cereal for every meal except her last meal which is only formula. Everyday we see more of her personality. For the moment she sleeps from 9:30pm to 6:00am with a little interruption at 3:00am when she wants to come to our bed. Right. Well, we are making changes on "that" routine, however at 3am every night she wakes up chewing on her hands and sucking on them like there is no food in her future. So, at that time I bring her to bed with us and all is well in world- she stops almost immediately and falls back to sleep in a snap.
I know, I know, we will pay for that for along time (bringing her to our bed to sleep with us) but for now she enjoys it and so do we. Who can resist this cute girl.

Hello, I am back! Yes, it has been a while. I wonder why? Do you? Well, these days our hours are just short but as every new parent will say "We are enjoying every moment". Keelan is just a doll, and I am not saying that because she is daughter. She is really a doll. This is going to be a short blog today (and I do not want to sound like a broken record) because I am just tired...oh and my carpal syndrome is a killer, on both hands! Good grief!
Anyway, Keelan is a big girl now, eating about 7 to 8 ounces of her organic Earth's Best formula. She is becoming (no offense to anyone) a granola baby. LOL. Earth friendly diapers, etc.etc. Funny anecdote moment: Keelan is the perfect baby when we go out. Everywhere we go she just sleep, no a sound. A perfect angel, but then, just as we approach the door to enter the building, Waaaaa waaa waaaaaaaaaaaa........................... well you get the picture. We adore her, Keelan is developing a pretty interesting personality. Love her smile.

Well, finally I was able to bypass the password feature of my Palm Centro phone. Technology...

So, just today I download about a 100 photos of Keelan since she was born. I will be posting many of them a few at a time.

December 27: Changes

Hurray! No more apnea monitor. She is done with it and we can not be happier about this. Also Keelan is off the caffeine as well. She has changed so much since NICU, her weight now is about 7 pounds. Her preemie clothes are now a memory and no longer fits her. She can now turn on her side a little and we have no need for an alarm. She IS the alarm. Keelan wakes up to eat right on the dot every four hours, her bottles are now 4 ounces. We have also changed the formula from Enfamil/Similac, the popular commercial brands to Earth's Best, which is an organic formula. We like this formula a lot and Keelan seems to like it too, however, she is not only burping but passing gas is an often and loud experience. Our observation is that she seems to be more alert and less sedate after the feeding. Her lungs are definitely healthy as she cries or best describe, complains (no tears yet) really loud.

Well, so far so good. As I write this my Mom and Dad are interacting with Keelan, she loves my Mom's bosom and by now she recognizes my Mom's scent. William and I still a bit sleep deprived, I am practicing getting up early since I will go back to work in January. William will become the Daddy-manny during the day. The house has changed a lot, in fact, our whole life is different. Overall, I have to say that William and I are truly enjoying our new role. Yes, from time to time we miss something, but that is nothing in comparison to what we now have...Keelan.

December 6: Sleep Depravation

ZzzzZzzzZzzZZzzZZz...Keelan is home now and our schedules had dramatically changed. Needless to say that we have to come up with very creative ways to reorganize our old schedule to fit our new life as parents. No one told us about not sleeping, sure some jokes were made about the issue... I thought it was all a joke. No no no, not a joke at all. None of the books we read about pregnancy and parenthood mentioned that really, one does not sleep...at all.
Finally we worked out a schedule that seems to work. William tends to Keelan from 4am to 12pm then goes to work. I take care of her from noon to midnight. Then we "sleep", to do it all over again the next day. Just recently we have also been able to add a few "social" activities to our schedule. I have to say it feels great to socialize with other adults. Not that we are not enjoying Keelan, we are, but I have not really been out the house for anything but to go the grocery store and things of that sort, in addition, I am not working due to the maternity leave, so you can image. I have become a TV junkie-housewife of sort. This is not so like me-I see myself more like one of those working mothers (of course being a homemaker is a job in itself) but I was born to work outside the house, I miss my classroom. So, the new challenge for me is to learn how to juggle a career, a marriage, the home and the baby. I know this will be an interesting, exciting and wonderful journey.

I will continue this entry later as I have now to feed Keelan...this is our time to bond. Good night or good morning...

November 25: Happy First Month

Today is Keelan's first month of life celebration.
A perfect time to give thanks.

Happy First month Keelan!

Her first visit to the pediatrician was today. She is now, 4 pounds and 14 ounces and measures almost 19 inches head to toe. We are happy with her progress. So far no incidents to report about the apnea monitor. Keep us in your prayers. As to our sleep, well, we a re a bit sleep deprived because of her feeding schedule but loving every minute with Keelan.

---To the nurses and doctors at the IL Masonic NICU: thank you again for your wonderful job taking care of Keelan. We could not asked for anything more. And to Priscilla from labor and delivery, we are in eternal gratitude to you for your dedication to your and your intuition, because of it Keelan is here alive and well. Thank you also to the nurses of mother and baby for taking care of me in such a special way.

...as I was saying yesterday, we are thankful for the blessing we have received and for the people in our path that have taken care of Keelan. She is closer to come home now and we are ready for her.

What is new with Keelan:
-feeding was 58ml almost 2 ounces of breast milk
-her eyes wide open more often
-she showed me what makes her comfortable--sleeping on my bosom

November 20: Apnea Monitor Training

Well, well, well...we had a training on how to use an apnea monitor. There is just one way t describe it-LOUD- yes, it is loud and there is no volume to tune up or down. Today our trip to NICU was or felt more promising than yesterday. We (William and I and my Mom, who is visiting and helping me during my recovery) had our apnea monitor training, Keelan look and feel grown, and overall the wait to bring her home did not seemed as long as I thought it was. Mostly because I realized that today is Thursday and not Wednesday as I thought (that is what not going to work does to you- you lose track of real time).

Setting up the appointment for the monitor training was pretty easy and the trainer was very nice and easy to understand. Going home with the monitor means that Keelan will still have a "wires" connected for at least 6 to 8 more weeks. At least she will be home and that is all we want. We will not miss NICU at all, and I am sure that Keelan, if she could speak now, will say the same. However, we must say that Keelan have had nothing but the best care possible and that every nurse that have been in contact with Keelan had been very caring to her and sympathetic to us. Of course there is always "one rotten apple" but we want to focus on the positive and on the great people we had come across with. There are many people we want and need to thank.

November 19: Car Seat Test

will remain at the hospital for a few more days

November 18
We brought in the car seat to the NICU-Intermediate Nursery. We bought- well my Mom bought us- a Chicco Key Fit 30 car seat (high consumer report ratings), we were excited. This meant that Keelan was closer to come home with us. Well, not quite like that. After arriving to the hospital yesterday evening we realized that Keelan was "unreachable", she was being tested and had all sort of lines, cables, tape and what have you on her body. She was getting a "nomogram"(hope I spell this correctly). So, during the test is best not to disturb the baby so the results as a accurate as possible. Needless to say were kind of sad, at the same time, we know that she will be home soon but we were not able to hold her yesterday. Since the room was full and busy we decided to go back home- it felt terrible.
November 19:
Today, we went to the hospital at an earlier time. Lats night William could not sleep at all, I tossed a bit but woke up at 5am. As I was saying, we woke up this morning with the feeling hopeful she might come home, so we cleaned the house a bit more and organized her co-sleeper. Wash the sheets and all fabric that goes in the co-sleeper. Once the task was completed, we were off to the hospital. Hope was the word of the day. Keelan was still as sleep in her crib, so peaceful, so pretty, so innocent. We meet with the Doctor, who informed us about her status, so far so good, until were informed about the results of nomogram--not good. or at least not what we hope it would be. She has to stay a few more days due to an "apnea" incident. So, a few more days it is. Dad is heart broken as he was looking forward to have her at home tonight. She is back on "caffeine" and once home she will be monitored, at least for until she is 44 to 46 weeks old.
We are not thrill with the idea but given the circumstances it is best to look at the situation with an open mind. She had received the best care possible at the hospital. To jeopardize that at his time will be foolish, so we can wait a few more days-piece of cake.
Tonight, even with all the positive thinking, it is difficult to leave her behind.

Francis writes: "My selfish mind will say to me that is a good time to rest and have to myself, my motherly mind overrides that selfish thought and reminds me that she is all I want. Keelan is wanted and loved. I can not wait to have her home. She will be loved, cherished, and care for. Every day no matter how tired I feel I look forward to have her here and I look forward to see her grow, I look forward to share my life experiences with her. Plain and simple, she is a precious gift to me.

November 16: Learning to latch

Keelan is closer to than we imagine to be able to come home. She already weight 4 pounds and 5 ounces. The new skill for Keelan to learn is how to latch. We have been practicing together, Keelan practice to latch to my nipple during her feeding and learn how manipulate the breast so she can get enough breast milk. It has been an interesting experience, mostly because the breast feeding process has become a bonding experience for William, Keelan and I.

I am still in awe. Motherhood is an experience one can never fully understand until the day in which you become a mother. The feeling and level of responsibility is incredible. The closest thing to motherhood (before having Keelan) for me was teaching. Now, everything is different, I still love to teach but Keelan has become my first love.

PS- William and I had completed our Infant CPR training.

November 8: Sweet Pink Dreams Celebration

Thank you to my mother and other family members for their support and love.

Keelan continues to progress, she will be moved to an open crib today (God willing) as long as she can maintain her own body temperature. The next step after that is for her to be able to suck, swallow, and breathe. Also, to stop taking Digoxin and Caffeine, and most importantly to continue to gain weight. She is now 3 pounds 14 ounces. Continue to have Keelan in your prayers.

November 4: Reflections

Is time to vote. I woke up early today (4:30 am) not by choice-I just did. My first thought of the day today was Keelan. So I called NICU. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that her weight is now "1652", in plain words/numbers we can all understand that is about 3 pounds and 10.5 ounces, another milestone for Keelan. It is amazing to realize, now, that the little things- the ones that seem the must insignificant are those things that make us the happiest.

I am still going through emotions, making sense of all that had happened since the afternoon of October 24. Yet, we still have to officially thank all the people involved and in particularly the nurse that took it upon herself to repeat the test, even when it seemed unnecessary. She was an angel.

On that note, I do believe that there was something special happening on that day. It was Ivette's birthday, my deceased sister. And as her memories may have nothing to do with Keelan, I am convinced that Ivette was there and watching over, just like an angel. This may sound to many like a cliche, it does not matter to me. On that day, my husband and I witness a miracle. Our gratitude has not limits; and when we think about what would have happened if we had left at the end of the test. What would had happened if we had been inpatient? What would had happened if the nurse would have just done "her work" and not take that extra precaution step? What if...?
Yes, I am convinced, it was a miracle. The signs were there for us to see that she was getting ready to come early. Early in the pregnancy she was "in position", we started to prepare for her really early as well- purchasing the bassinet, arranging the bedroom, etc... We started to make changes when we really did not have to yet. To me, now reflecting upon what had happened, these were signs for us. Our last ultrasound was the most visible sign Keelan was up to something. She was so low in my pelvis that the nurse could not see her face at all.

Maybe we are, or I am reading too much into it. In any case, it is still a miracle she is her with us and that her progress so far has been steady. I am convince this pregnancy was blessed. I can not help it to think about how much we (William and I) wanted Keelan in our lives. She has definitely changed us, her arrival although unexpected, could have not happened at a better time. Thanksgiving is around the corner, and this one will be a very special celebration of life.

Keelan is making progress. Today her bilirubin is down to about a 6 from 9. The higher the number the more dangerous it is. She was diagnosed with jaundice [... a yellowing of the skin and other tissues of a newborn infant. A bilirubin level of more than 5 mg/dL manifests clinical jaundice in neonates whereas in the adults 2 mg/dL would look icteric. In newborns jaundice is detected by blanching the skin with digital pressure so that it reveals underlying skin and subcutaneous tissue. Information retrieved from Wikipedia on November 2008] and currently she is receiving phototherapy to reduce the levels of bilirubin. Every day is a milestone for Keelan. Everyone says she is doing great.

Our routines (William and me) have so drastically changed. Everyday we go to the hospital and there is nothing else more important than that. William look forward with "extreme anxiety" to go to the hospital to see Keelan. Me, I am still in awe-kind of in disbelief, like living a Dali in a Dali or Frida painting. At times all this seems surreal, like a beautiful sweet yet sour dream. I think is because I after planning and preparing for a December delivery all of the sudden I find myself a turned into a mother. I remember, going for a routine test and then...blam, kablam, blast and KABOOM...the baby is here! No birth plan, no waiting, no walking up and down counting contractions, nothing! I was rushed to the surgery room, blast with general anesthesia (since Lovenox users can not have an epidural or some types of anesthesia due to the negative interaction of the drugs having the potential to be fatal), fifteen minutes later...here it is -to the tune of the Miss America song- Keelan is born. I really miss it, being able to see her coming out and transition to our world.
After her birth, things have been a bit stressful, confusing, and painful as well as joyful. In a flash we have change, I have changed. She is my world and I am eager to give the best I can offer to the full percentage of my abilities. I am really looking forward to her development as an individual. Of course this open up another can of worms-getting old. I am 40 years old, I used to look at myself in the mirror and not realize my true age. Not that I was in denial, but i did not feel my biological age. Now, eight days later after the birth of Keelan, I look at myself and see a mother, I see I am 40, it is my reality. Not that I feel old, but I feel suddenly a sense of responsibility that I have never felt before. I guess the motherhood bug has got to me. Yet, when I hold her in my arms I feel a bit clumsy- I have never been "Miss Pink and Rose Delicate Flower" kind of girl. I can't wait to bring my Keelan home.

Every day going and coming to the hospital is become more difficult because I do not want to leave her behind. She is a feisty as mom, you should see her the other day while I was holding her in what is called Kangaroo (skin to skin), out of the sudden she this tiny thing of a person started to wiggle just like a professional contortionist from the top of my chest all the way until she found my breast. And let me tell you, she really fought her way down, when she could not get what she was she was looking for on one side, she managed to wiggle her way to the right...I wished I had a video camera then, it was just amazing because this 3 pound 10 ounces girl had a lot of strength to pull such a stunt like that.

Well, back to her progress, she is can now suck, tolerate at least 16 ml of formula or breast milk, pee like a fountain, open her eyes even with bright light, sneeze, yawn, cry-only when she have to- among other things. She, I believe recognizes and distinguishes me from William. When William holds her she smile "looks at him", relaxes and sleep. When I hold her, she does all the same things that she does with William but...except that she immediately search for you know what-my breast. She can smell it.

She is doing very well and recently was moved from newborn intensive care unit to the intermediate nursery. Everyday is a great milestone for her and for us. Many changes have occurred and will continue to happened. We are thrill to have her with us and we look forward to provide a life of wonders and joy for her.

A pregnancy story

Francis: "William we have to stop at Walgreens on the way home."
William: "Why?"
Francis: "Because I have to buy something."
William: "What?"
Francis: "A pregnancy test."
William: "Why?"
Francis: "I have a feeling."
William: What!?"...

Motherhood and other thoughts

So, I am huge. GRANDE! GRANDE! GRANDE! Oh my gosh! I did not realized how large I have become. My perception of myself was waaaaay off. This photograph was taken on September 25, 2008. So I was about 28 weeks pregnant. Today I am 32 weeks and many still that my belly look small. I am fine with that, what I will not dispute is that the popular opinion is that I look fabulous. I have only gain around 10 pounds since April 2008- the beginning of the pregnancy. Not bad for a first time mother.

I wish my parents were living closer to me- yes maybe a selfish thought but I think they would be enjoying this process (my pregnancy) a lot more and so would I. Some days I wish my mom could see me or help me shopping for baby gear etc. At least I can talk to her on the phone and this is the reason for the blog. The blog is another way to share with her and my dad.

These days I have been wondering about pregnancy and what it does to you. I do not know what it is, but recently, I have been more aware of my students issues. Not that I was not aware before, but now, is like I am really into their lives. Maybe because of the time I spend at work everyday or maybe because with pregnancy I might have become more sensitive of my surroundings. Maybe, the "motherhood mode" is kicking in. I am noticing more around me and especially the pregnant students at my school and their issues. I am amaze and overwhelm with what many of them have to face at such young age. because now, I am "officially official" an adult. A mother! And that is how many of my students see me now. Lucky them, with all this motherhood business I have also become more patient, which works towards their advantage in the classroom. I particularly enjoying the way in which the relationship with my students is developing- the classroom is very pleasant. Never underestimate the emotional capacity of a teenager. Is is surprisingly amazing.

Going back to kicking, yes, Keelan is kicking, moving, poking and every else she can do now, she is doing. According to the book, she can now turn her head towards were the sound is coming. I would love to see that. Unfortunately, we did not get an ultrasound in our last visit, so I am hoping that we will get one on the next. It is pretty amazing to see her move inside you. William and I had been in a "awe" state ever since we saw the first ultrasound. If you think about it it is amazing and almost unbelievable what happens inside you body. I am still in "awe" every time.

The house is currently undergoing many changes, so is William. I have changed, I know, and I hope it is for the best and the better of the new live that soon will come. Let the real games begin! Coming soon December 16.

Keelan's Two Last names

This has been a very debated topic, a source of misunderstandings, arguments and disappointments. So, I like to clear the air with some information that might help many understand the reasons behind our daughter to be born.

William and I come from different places in life. I have a strong Spanish heritage mixed with Taino and Caribe Indians (indigenous people of Puerto Rico before the Spanish conquest and slaughter), African and in my particular family form my mother's side, French-just a bit. And of course after the Spanish-American War, Puerto Ricans became American citizens, so that means that I have assimilated much of the American culture through years of "colonization", but the Spanish traditions are stronger. William's heritage is Irish and Swedish, his ancestors came to the United States a long time ago, so it is fair to say to that William's cultural traditions are "American" (when he reads this blog he might expand on the topic).

As I was saying, we both have strong attachments to our traditions, however, we have also become a new family after our marriage in September 2006. It was and it still is important to us to create a home in which both cultures are honored. An example of this was our wedding day, it was a beautiful merge of cultures, traditions and beliefs. Now, with the birth of Keelan, it was important for us to continue to honour both of our cultural backgrounds.
The first name of our daughter will be Keelan. This name was chosen after an extensive research. It was important to chose a name that was easy to pronounce, to write and to remember. Also, a name that would reflect the father's ancestral heritage, will match the father's family name (Scanlan), will have some positive meaning as well as it would be a not so common ordinary name. The name Keelan (pronounce: KEE-lan) has Gaelic, Celtic and Irish origins, meaning "fair". Her middle name will be Francis, as this is William's middle name (William Francis) and my first name ( Francis Haydee). Our daughter will have two last names to honour William's family (Scanlan), and to honour my family name (Allende). Choosing our daughter's name is a very private matter. Many people is of the opinion that we should not do this. I feel that by not doing this, I will be denying my child of part of heritage and instanly erasing her Caribbean and Hispanic roots. I feel offended when others make comments such as "you are in America now" or " this is the American way" as if Puerto Rico is not a part of it- we are a "colony" a "commonwealth" of the United States, we are for all political and social purposes American citizens. But I digress from the original topic, this one will a be one for another time in which we can discuss the political status of the Island. Back to the last name matter, I strongly believe that they way in which we choose to honour our heritage is a matter of personal identity and pride. Our child will bear her father's last name, no doubt about that, but also it is important that there is a connection with the mother other than the preceding 9 months in the womb. So, she will be Scanlan-Allende. Taking from the Spanish tradition, children are given a first name (Keelan), a middle name (Francis), two surnames in this case the father's last name (Scanlan- inherit from his father) and the mother's last name (Allende- inherit from her father). The result will be Keelan Francis Scanlan-Allende. As we live in a patriarchal society, "Scanlan" is the main-first last name and "Allende" the second last name. These can be used with or without a hyphen, matter that I am researching. Later in life she will be socially address as Ms. Scanlan or Ms. Scanlan-Allende, when she marries she can choose to 1) keep her maiden name (as I did) Scanlan-Allende or 2) drop both surnames and take her partner's surname or 3) keep her maiden name and add her partner's name (Scanlan-Allende- Partner's surname).

So our Keelan will have a rich heritage filled beautiful with traditions.

Parenthood around the Corner

We (William and I) are on our way to invest in the latest model of ....Washer and Dryer machines!Uhu, rather than in the latest fashion or the car or gadget. So, our lives is turning into a more domestic affair one day at a time. No more late nights at the club-as if we did, NOT! But it feels good to think that at least "we being there-done that..." No regrets. I am enjoying the transition to real adulthood and little by little I look in the mirror and I see my mom. Oh my GOD! I do. This is nothing to be scare about, I am kind of look forward to it- more so because my mom has gracefully aged. She is a very stylish lady and those of you who know her will agree. So at least I know that my wrinkles will take some time to actually show up.

We still have a lot of arranging to do around of the house in preparation to receive Keelan Francis in our home-soon to be her home. I am hoping she will like the way we decorate-yes were a bit eclectic and eccentric and artsy, but I really hope that this rub off on her. We hope that as she grows up, she will be as excited and interested in life as we are. You know, art, music, culture, conversations, travel, education, as so on. So far, in our immediate future, I just want to be able to enjoy her and feel prepare to manage all the little things that will come up. One thing is clear...she will be expensive!!!!!! Starting with her day care- and believe me it is not easy to find a clean, well organized, responsible place. There are many places and mot all are as I will refer to "kosher". "Babies r us" and they are also money maker for a lot of other people dedicated to convince us that we really need to purchase that device so we can hear the heart beat anytime we want It is a must, how can we not have it? I have never sen so many baby stuff in my life until now. So if you are expecting-beware. Do your research, maybe you do not need to buy the $800.00 scary name stroller Buuu-ga-boooooooo! I am finally-or closer- to settle with the one that stings and ride with a crown to rule the world... "Bumbleride Queen B". Not inexpensive but half the price of the "scary one" and I can use it up to 65 pounds. So for the next, 3 to 4 years maybe almost five (with proper nutrition) my girl can ride comfortably in style and we will not have to spend in mew strollers. Well, maybe a I will get a McLaren later--they are ultra lite a great for traveling, sturdy and a great price-good quality. I have become a baby product expert. Unbelievable.

Missing "All Girls" at the Yogi Bear 2008

Ladies, you will be wondering why I was not at the Yogi Bear Cabin this year. Well let me tell you...Yesterday (Saturday) afternoon I was release from the Prenatal Surveillance Unit at the Masonic Hospital after 23 hours of observation due to an unfortunate and unexpected fall at work. Here is what happened...

Last Friday while I was having lunch with one of my students at the school cafeteria, two other students (whom I do not teach) started to play rough with each other. They were running up the aisle between the tables. While wrestling, one of them got caught to my chair as I am sitting having lunch and oblivious to what is about to happen. I was suddenly dragged away from the table, fast and forcefully to the aisle between the tables. Needless to say that with the same force they dragged me out of the table, the chair was taken from underneath me causing me to fall flat on the floor hitting my bottom and my back, legs up. As I am realizing, "Oh my God! I am falling." It is interestingly (sad) enough, I do not remember anyone coming to my aid to get me off the floor. Then again my adrenaline kicked in and I got up from the floor as I could. It was all so fast. A few seconds or minutes later the whole situation was taken care of by the appropriate staff members. I end up going to the hospital as I had back pain and my belly felt heavy and strange. I started to get worried (Keelan is our first baby). I can't help to think about what would had happened if...say the students, who are football players, had accidentally fall on top of me squashing my pregnant belly? The mental image of me falling legs up is funny but soon one realizes that is not so but gruesome to think about the ifs...

The story ends well. After 23 hours of observation the doctors released me as everything seems to in good shape. However, for the next couple of days I have to be vigilant of any sudden change in the baby movements, any bleeding, etc. Today, Baby Keelan is doing fine in the womb and moving as if there was some party going on. I was a bit sore and concerned on Friday about the placenta but it is were it needs to be along with everything else. And yes, my ego has been restored. For the rest of this semester, luncheons at the cafeteria are not an option for me. At least not during peak hours. So, I will enjoy visiting with my students and having lunches in the safety and peacefulness of my classroom away from the tumultuous lunch periods. I will miss the lunchroom as I like socializing with my students but for the next four months Keelan's well-being is first.

And that is what happened...that was the reason I missed the annual "All Girls" camping trip.
